About the Investment Ecosystem

Firms and professionals in the investment management industry are stewards of capital – they help clients make investment decisions, invest their money, and provide services to enhance financial markets. The scope of these services can include trading, asset management – constructing and managing investment portfolios and funds – and regulation of these systems.

Australia has one of the largest and fastest growing investment management industries in the world, with around $4 trillion in funds under management (‘FUM’). Vast majority of the monies are pooled by asset owners such as superannuation funds, insurance companies, sovereign wealth funds, endowments and family offices. Investment professionals in these firms allocate money across various asset classes and could choose to either manage their assets directly, outsource to investment managers or a combination of the two. Some investment managers specialise in particular asset class whereas others offer a more diversified set of products.

Intermediaries such as investment consultants, investment banks, research and operations firms, also play a critical role in the investment management industry ecosystem. To learn more about how you could find a career in this industry, watch the full videos and the webinar recordings explaining the role of select industry participants.

This series of ‘Analytical. Curious. You.’ were prepared to position you for a variety of career paths in the investment management industry.
