The Vital Voice: Embracing Verbal Communication in the Workplace

In an era where digital communication reigns supreme, the art of verbal communication often takes a backseat. However, as university students poised to enter the professional world, it is crucial to recognise the unparalleled value of in-person and telephonic conversations.

Why Verbal Communication Matters

Verbal communication is more than just exchanging information; it’s about connecting with individuals on a personal level. In-person interactions allow us to pick up on non-verbal cues like body language and facial expressions, enriching the conversation and fostering a deeper understanding. When we choose to speak directly, whether face-to-face or over the phone, we open the door to immediate feedback and the opportunity to clarify and adapt our message in real-time.

The Power of a Conversation

Engaging in verbal dialogue is the quickest way to solve problems and brainstorm solutions collaboratively. It encourages active listening and the exchange of ideas, leading to more innovative outcomes. Moreover, these interactions contribute significantly to relationship-building—a cornerstone of both personal growth and professional networking.

Overcoming the Hesitation

Many of us hesitate to initiate a phone call or approach someone for a conversation. Yet, embracing these moments can lead to meaningful relationships and opportunities. Remember, every great friendship, mentorship, or collaboration began with a simple “hello.”

The Challenge to You!

I challenge you, as university students, to step out of your comfort zone in your internship or part-time job. Next time you’re tempted to send a text or an email, consider if a phone call or a quick chat at their desk could be more effective. Not only will this enhance your communication skills, but it will also set you apart as someone who values the human connection in a digital world.
