Membership Types

Top

There are three membership types, primarily dependent on your level of work experience:

  • Regular membership is intended for those with at least 48 months of appropriate work experience. If you have completed all three levels of the CFA® Program or both levels of the CIPM® Program you must become a regular member to receive your CFA® charter or CIPM® certificate.
  • Affiliate membership is intended for those with less than 48 months of appropriate work experience. Affiliate members are members of CFA Institute and have access to CFA Institute resources.
  • Candidate membership is intended for candidates enrolled in Level I of the CFA or CIPM Programs. It does not provide membership in CFA Institute. Upon passing Level I we hope that you advance to regular or affiliate membership to take advantage of the benefits of CFA Institute membership.

You do not need to have completed the CFA or CIPM Programs, or even intend to undertake either Program, to become a member of CFA Institute and CFA Society Melbourne.

The table below summarises the three membership options:

Regular and affiliate members are required to demonstrate understanding of the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.  This can be demonstrated by:

  • Passing Level I of the CFA or CIPM Programs or
  • Completing the CFA Institute self-administered Standards of Practice Handbook exam which is free of charge and takes between 30 minutes and one hour.
  • Two professional references are required if one of the references is a regular member of CFA Society Melbourne.

The membership year runs from 1 July to 30 June and is not pro-rated.

If you have any queries regarding membership options please contact us.

FAQs

What membership option is right for me?

The appropriate membership type depends on how much work experience you have.
If you are enrolled in Level I of the CFA® Program and have less than one year of appropriate work experience you should choose candidate membership.

If you have 48 months or more of work experience regular membership is appropriate, otherwise affiliate membership is your best option.

What is the difference between regular and affiliate membership?

Both regular and affiliate members are members of CFA Institute and have access to the same resources and benefits.  However, regular members also have voting rights with CFA Institute and CFA Society Melbourne.

What type of work experience is appropriate?

CFA Institute is responsible for determining what counts as appropriate work experience. Additional information is available on the CFA Institutes website.

Broadly, you must be able to show that you have experience in evaluating or applying financial, economic or statistical data as part of the investment decision-making process.

Do I have to complete the CFA Program to become a member?

No.  You can become a regular or affiliate member without completing or even undertaking the CFA Program.

However, if you have not passed Level I of the CFA Program you must sit a Standards of Practice Examination to demonstrate your understanding of the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice Handbook.

How do I apply?

Regular and affiliate members should apply through CFA Institute. Candidate members can apply through CFA Society Melbourne by contacting us.

When can I join?

You can join as a regular, affiliate or candidate member at any time.  However the membership year runs from 1 July to 30 June and is not pro-rated.

How much is membership?

Refer to the table on the Membership Types page.

I’m no longer working in the industry but would like to maintain my CFA® charter.  Is a discount available?

If you are retired, temporarily unemployed or no longer working in the investment management industry you can apply for retired status via CFA Institute. This will provide a discount on your CFA Institute and CFA Society Melbourne annual dues.

I’m enrolled in the CFA Program, does that mean I’m a member?

No.  Being enrolled in the CFA Program does not automatically make you a member of CFA Institute or a local society.

I’ve passed Level III of the CFA Program, how do I get my CFA charter?

You must be a regular member of CFA Institute to receive your CFA charter.  More information on receiving your CFA charter is available from CFA Institute.

How do I update my details?

Regular and affiliate members can update their details through the CFA Institute website.

Candidate members should email events@cfas.org.au to update their details.
